Grimes - Art Angels (A-)

And just like that my top 15 for the year changes. Such a short lived list! Tell me your favorite memory of the list in the comment below, the funeral will be held in my bedroom two days from now. It won’t be formal, the sweats you’re wearing right now are fine. On to Grimes. This album is easily top five, overflowing with energy and originality. My friend just asked me what the vibe was and I really can’t describe it. Upbeat electronic pop with a hint of industrial-like intensity? Listen to the first three songs and you’ll understand what I’m talking about and hopefully be committed to the rest of the album. Normally, I like to wait until I’ve listened to an album three times before I form my final opinion. The first time could be a good hook but after a few more listens you realize it lacks staying power. After three listens you generally know where it stands. With that being said I listened to this all the way through one time and I know it’s going to be in rotation for quite awhile.

As an artist Grimes seems to be in her own world and she knows it, developing a style truly all her own. Influences are apparent in any artist but the ability to mold those sounds and make your own creation from them is truly unique. Her 2012 album Visions was one of my favorites from that year but after one listen of Art Angels I’d say it’s apparent that she’s only getting better. This album will hook you on so many levels, just sit back and let it take you over. She’s always said her musical influences tend to be on the more intense side, Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails to name a few and you can finally see that shining through, in the best way possible. Just listen to the first three songs and you’ll know right away whether you’re in or not. To decide a single would be a travesty, as it is with any great album (honestly listen to the whole thing, I’m begging you!), but if I must…
