'The future is now' is a term I use fairly often to describe things jokingly, usually when seeing things I feel like stunt the growth of our society (I am a FUNNY guy!). When I listened to the latest release from this Austin based synth throwback quartet (retro electro baby!), I felt like that phrase was more a reality. Driving through the night with this playing in my ears made me feel like I traveled to another time, though it was a time I had yet to experience. Much of the music I listen to creates a visual sensation inside of me, though it's visions of the past, maybe an altered past, but the past no less. This felt different.
RR7349 is specific. Extremely specific. It's in a niche corner of it's own genre. To find it you almost have to know what to look for; and once you find your introduction, you're sucked in (for me, and many others I assume, it was Cliff Martinez's Drive soundtrack, which also gave me Kavinsky). The bands that make up this modernized take on the past aren't popular, even the biggest ones are small when comparatively. Yet, the void they fill is so distinctive, it's immeasurable.
All of S U R V I V E's releases are branded, rather than named; for example, Mnq026 and HD009 are RR7349's two predecessors. This album plays more like a score to the everyday than it does an album, providing a coolness to my movements and an importance to my thoughts; soundtracking my life as it plays out in real time, but in doing so it pushes you into a story, preparing you for some sudden impact, acting as a guide for the situation you've been throw into but aren't ready for. But it's a storm you can weather, the music is sure of it.
I realize this is more an abstract view of what I felt while I listened to this record, but isn't that what you want conveyed? This record won't make you think, it doesn't challenge you, it only transports you, setting your imagination free, giving you the wings to take up any reality that the mind is inspired to build. You won't even realize you're listening to an album after awhile, it will just be the sound that pushes you forward. The future is cool, the future is now.
