Apparently my level of incompetence knows no bounds as I can't even keep up with my favorite artist. Last month Chris Thile, who is nothing short of a modern day King to me, and renowned jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, released their first single in support their upcoming album, Chris Thile & Brad Mehldau, due out January 27th, 2017.
"Scarlet Town" is a cover of a Gillian Welch song from her 2011 record The Harrow & The Harvest. The folky original is more in the wheelhouse of bluegrass maestro Thile rather than Mehldau's jazz, then again "wheelhouse" is a relative term as they can both do anything. Both their styles are built so heavily on improvisation making the dynamic between the two virtuosos one that breathes constant freshness, creating a unique atmosphere to say the least.
I think I could have stopped with the above paragraph but I wanted to say that the album will be a mix of covers and originals. I don't know if it was necessary to tell you that, I guess I assumed a response along the lines of, "Ooooh covers AND originals you say?? NOW I'm in! Thank you Spenser!" If was anything near that, you're welcome, if you're mad I'm still making you "read words" then...like....whatever dude. Here's a live performance from late 2015 of the single to ease your sullied heart.
